The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has launched a call for proposals for offshore wind power projects in the state-owned waters of Lakes Erie and Ontario.

By March 20, 2010, the NYPA wants to receive proposals for offshore wind farms from 120 MW up to 500 MW. The organisation expects to announce the winning project or projects by December next year.

The power generated by the offshore wind farms, which are expected to come online by 2015, would be connected up to the regional power grid through a power purchase agreement with the New York Independent System Operator.

“The development of a wind energy project in the Great Lakes off the shores of New York will bring us another step towards my goal to meet 30% of the State’s electricity needs from renewable resources by 2015,” says state Governor David Paterson.
