EU gives go ahead for €10 million grant to Dutch carbon capture demo

The European Commission has given the go ahead for the Netherlands to back a carbon capture demonstration project with a €10 million grant.

Nuon Energy Sourcing, part of the Vattenfall Group, will deploy at CO2 capture facility at its integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant in Buggenum, in the Limburg Province.

The project, which is in partnership with Delft University, ECN, KEMA and TNO, will optimise the energy efficiency of the pre-combustion capture technology.

Nuon will share the data gathered from the demonstration project with the Dutch authorities and may also use the technology on its large-scale Magnum IGCC power plant, which is planned to be built in Eemshaven, in the Groningen Province.

The grant was given the go ahead by the Commission under EU state aid rules because the benefits of the project outweigh any potential competition issues.
