IBM announced this week that it is to work with Canadian institution McMaster University to improve the energy efficiency of its campus buildings.
McMaster will use a new technology developed by IBM that analyses, simulates and forecasts energy consumption from 60 buildings and a hospital on campus.
The new system will analyse information from a variety of activities in the building – heating, cooling, water heating, lighting, appliances, etc. – and other factors affecting energy consumption.
McMaster says it will use the data to develop building performance models, identify under-performing buildings and the causes of energy inefficiencies.
“The project with McMaster University will make significant contributions towards a better understanding of energy conservation and greenhouse gas reductions,” says Bill Oliphant of IBM. “[This] knowledge can be used by all kinds of corporations and institutions as they look for ways to be more environmentally and energy efficient.”
