The Ontario Power Authority last week opened a new energy efficiency programme aimed at helping large industrial companies reduce their electricity consumption.

The Industrial Accelerator programme will provide financial incentives to companies that sign-up to conservation targets over five years.

The incentives could cover up to 70% of eligible capital costs for electricity-saving projects, as well as providing the opportunity to save up to 30% on electricity costs.

The programme hopes to target the 45 large industrial concerns, including those in the pulp and paper, iron and steel, mining, auto assembly, chemicals, petroleum refining, smelting and refining, and cement sectors, in Ontario that are directly connected to the transmission system.

The province has a sector of around 20,000 small, medium and large companies that account for around one-third of the region’s total electricity consumption.

“Partnering with our largest energy consumers to reduce their energy use will enhance their long-term competitiveness and is part of Ontario’s transformation from being a leader in consumption to a leader in conservation,” says Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Brad Duguid.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Government has followed Ontario’s lead and announced plans to phase out all older coal-fired power plants and require new facilities to match the performance of more efficient natural gas power plants.
