Solar power developer SunEdison, a division of MEMC Electronic Materials, has agreed a €47 million financing deal with a German bank to complete 12 solar parks in Italy.
The solar parks in the province of Lecce, Apulia will each generate 1 MW and collectively provide enough power for over 3000 homes.
Seven of the Lecce plants are already operational and providing electricity to the grid, and the new financing from Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentale will enable the completion of construction on the remaining five developments by the autumn.
Earlier this year, SunEdison announced plans for a 72 MW photovoltaic solar plant near the northeastern Italian town of Rovigo, which would be the largest development of its kind in Europe.
“Solar energy has a very bright future in Italy,” says president of SunEdison, Carlos Domenech. “[We] plan to continue to expand rapidly in Italy and in our other targeted growth areas in the US, Canada and other European countries.”
Pancho Perez, general manager of Europe and MENA region, adds that the company has financing in place and is looking to expand its partners in the region.
“Our goal is to continue to increase our presence and our solar electric power interconnections in Italy over the course of the year,” he says.
