Landis+Gyr and CURRENT deliver smart solution for Spain and Portugal

Swiss energy management provider Landis+Gyr is joining forces with the European arm of US company CURRENT Group to cooperate on smart metering and grid solutions for Spain and Portugal.

The standards-based, interoperable smart grid solution will combine Landis+Gyr Gridstream™ products and E450 residential smart electricity meter with CURRENT’s PRIME technology.

The PRIME (PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution) concept is aimed at developing open, public and non-proprietary telecom solutions for smart metering, allowing different equipment from different manufacturers to work together.

“Interoperability of standards-based smart grid products, including smart meters, is one of the key foundations of an interconnected system spanning the customer, distribution, and transmission grids,” says Angel Hernández, general manager of CURRENT Group Europe.

Landis+Gyr will now offer CURRENT’s hardware and software smart grid products, including intelligent sensors, advanced communications equipment and its OpenGrid™ software, which makes smart metering possible and optimizes operation of the distribution grid.

“This agreement puts Landis+Gyr in the pole position for the deployment of smart metering in Spain and Portugal,” says Javier Jiménez, CEO of Landis+Gyr Spain.

Both Spain and Portugal are increasing their renewable energy generation, and Spain is starting to embark on major smart metering projects.
