The US Department of Energy (DOE) is launching ENERGY STAR® criteria for residential water heaters.
Taking effect from January 1, 2009, high-performance gas storage, whole-home gas tankless, advanced drop-in or integrated heat pump, solar and gas condensing water heaters will be eligible for an ENERGY STAR® label.
The labelling system will allow consumers to “make smart energy choices that will save money, energy and reduce our carbon footprint” says DOE Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Andy Karsner. The DOE project that after 5 years the scheme could save consumers $780 million in utility costs, avoid 4.2 million tons of CO2 emissions, and lead to energy savings of more than 3.9 billion kilowatt-hours.
