UK adopts feed-in tariffs for renewables

The UK looks set to adopt feed-in tariffs for renewables at last as new legislation in the Energy Bill was agreed by parliament.

The new measures agreed yesterday also include a Renewable Heat Incentive, which also covers the injection of renewable biogas into the gas network.

The move was welcomed by the renewables industry and environmental groups, who have been campaigning for feed-in tariffs over the last year.

“The Renewable Energy Association is delighted that that government has recognized the advantages of a tariff-style incentive scheme which will open doors for small-scale producers of renewable heat, electricity and bio-methane,” said director general Philip Wolfe.

The amendments tabled to the bill also increase the size of renewable installation that can sell energy back to the national grid from 3 MW to 5 MW.

The move could make it easier for community-scale renewables projects to get off the ground and find investors.

The final vote will take place this week and the legislation looks set to come into affect later this month.
