UK company launches novel solar collector

UK sustainable product designer, Industrial Design Consultancy, has launched SolarStore, an inflatable solar collector.

Made from a heavy-duty polymer, SolarStore works by allowing sunlight to pass through a clear outer layer to a black inner layer containing water, which is warmed up through heat transfer. Small enough to fit into a rucksack when deflated, SolarStore inflates to close to 2m2 to maximise solar absorption.

The manufacturers anticipate that the product will be mainly used in developing countries where reliable sources of electricity can be problematic, but could also find a use with campers looking for a portable source of hot water.
