The US city of Chicago has unveiled an electric vehicle charging station with a difference – it is solar powered.
The solar plug-in station has a tree-like canopy of solar panels, manufactured by Wanxiang America, hooked up to a concealed underground battery pack, which stores the energy. The ALL CELL Technologies’ energy storage device then provides zero-emission power for plug-in electric vehicles via Coulomb Technologies’ ChargePoint™ networked charging stations.
The entire facility was built by Carbon Day Construction and is sited at Chicago’s Department of Fleet Maintenance, where it will be used on a daily basis by the city’s fleet of electric vehicles.
“The day of true plug-in electric vehicles will be here sooner than most people realize and the world needs to be ready to accommodate them,” says Scott Emalfarb, CEO of Carbon Day. “Carbon Day will build them and they will come.”
