Amsterdam to install electric vehicle charging network

The city of Amsterdam has announced that it is installing 45 charging stations from Coulomb Technologies as part of a two-year electric vehicle demonstration project.

By 2012, the city plans to install 200 charging stations to serve the 10,000 electric vehicles that it aims to have on the road by 2015.

Coulomb Technologies will supply the ChargePoint™ Networked Charging Stations, which will be managed locally by 365-Energy. Energy company Nuon will supply renewable energy to the charging stations.

“We are proud to announce our first European deployment of Coulomb’s ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations,” said CEO Richard Lowenthal. “The city of Amsterdam will have the largest network of smart charging stations in Europe for fleet and consumer charging.”

Electric vehicle drivers will have to subscribe to the ChargePoint Network through a website. In return they will receive a ChargePoint Smart Card allowing them to charge their vehicle at any station. During the demonstration project, charging will be free.

Charging stations can be found on Google maps and drivers will able to request new stations through the subscriber website. As the network expands across Europe, drivers will be able to use any of the charging stations.
