Scotland to make all public sector vehicles low carbon by 2020

Scottish Parliament building

Straight from enacting some of the most stringent climate change legislation, the Scottish Government is proposing that all public sector vehicles should be low-carbon by 2020.

The consultation document published earlier this week also proposes that 95% of all new cars sold after this date would have to meet the same stringent low-carbon standards.

“Government must back up its world leading climate change targets with action,” said Climate Change Minister Stewart Stevenson.

He added that the public sector must be seen to lead the way and “set the standard”. The move will help create a market to drive further development of low-carbon technology, he said, and persuade consumers to move to low-carbon vehicles.

“Emissions from transport have been increasing in recent years and a major uptake of low carbon vehicle technologies is required to reverse this trend,” he said.
