US Energy Secretary Steven Chu yesterday confirmed that his department has completed new energy efficiency standards for electrical appliances in response to President Barack Obama’s request earlier this year.
One of Obama’s first actions in office was to call on the Department of Energy (DOE) to speed up the introduction of energy efficiency standards for a range of electrical equipment.
The DOE officially published the final ENERGY STAR standard – for vending machines – of the five outlined by Obama.
“These energy efficiency appliance standards will play an important role in lowering energy use in homes and business across the country,” said Secretary Chu.
In total, the five standards for dishwashers, ovens, commercial boilers and air conditioners and fluorescent and incandescent lamps, as well beverage vending machines, could add up to savings of 1.1 billion metric tons of CO2 when they come into effect in 2012.
