Energy generation, transmission and distribution giant Siemens and energy management specialist Landis+Gyr have announced plans to work together on smart metering.
Following the announcement that Landis+Gyr is joining forces with smart meter manufacturers Iskraemeco and Itron on interoperability standards for the European, Middle Eastern and African markets, the company’s efforts will now include Siemens as well.
The partnership between Landis+Gyr and Siemens will establish common interoperability standards and provide security for investment in smart grids.
“Together we will build an interoperable path, which will lead utilities – either directly or in stages – to the realization of their smart grid visions,” says Andreas Umbach, president and COO of Landis+Gyr.
Smart grids would enable communication between energy providers and customers, via smart meters, which can provide real-time information about energy consumption.
Many studies have indicated that accurate and timely information on energy consumption is the first step towards conservation and improved efficiency. Smart grids and metering also allow utilities to reward such behaviours through reduced tariffs for off-peak consumption.
