UK Government earmarks £20 million to clean up its act

The UK Government is to invest £20 million in energy efficiency measures to reduce emissions and energy costs from its central departments.

“We know it’s important to show leadership in this area – if we want everyone else to retrofit their homes it’s important government buildings also get some treatment,” says Energy and Climate Change Minister Joan Ruddock.

The investment, which is part of the £405 million low-carbon funding announced in this year’s budget, will go towards energy efficiency measures, smart meters, low-carbon cars and mapping potential sites for renewable installations on public land.

However, MPs voted this week not to sign up to the 10:10 campaign, which is asking individuals and organisation to pledge to reducing emissions by 10% over the next year.

From next year, central government departments will also be covered by the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC).
