US utility Southern California Edison (SCE) has reached agreement with solar thermal developer, eSolar, to supply 245 MW of power using eSolar’s concentrating solar towers technology.
eSolar will build the plants in the Antelope Valley of Southern California and expects to begin delivering energy in 2011, with 105 MW available by 2012, increasing to 245 MW by 2013.
The project is the first commercial-scale use of power tower solar thermal technology in the US, and follows on from eSolar’s $130 million funding round announced in April.
Commenting on the deal, Stuart Hemphill, vice president Renewable and Alternative Power at SCE says, “SCE is committed to providing renewable energy generation at competitive costs – to this end we review all of the possible sources to meet the growing demand for clean power. “eSolar’s proposed solar projects promises to be modular, scalable and easily and rapidly deployed,” he adds.
