SunEdison to build Europe’s largest solar power plant in Italy

US division of MEMC Electronic Materials, SunEdison, today announced that is has got the go ahead to build Europe’s largest photovoltaic solar power plant in Northeastern Italy, near Rovigo.

The 72 MW plant will start operation in the second half of 2010 and be completed by the end of the year, generating enough power for over 17,000 homes.

Spanish banking giant Banco Santander is jointly financing the project with SunEdison, but additional financial partners are expected to come on board.

“SunEdison is focused on enabling the growth of global solar markets through strong capabilities in project finance, engineering, low-cost procurement and operations and maintenance services,” says company president Carlos Domenech.
