GE has unveiled its latest foray into low-carbon technologies – an easy-to-use, smart-grid compatible electric vehicle charger.
The WattStation™ has been designed by San Francisco-based fuseproject, led by industrial designer Yves Behar.
As well as looking stylish, the WattStation, will significantly decrease vehicle charging time, GE claims, from around 12-18 hours to 2-8 hours for a 24 kWh battery.
The new device will be commercially available in the US and Europe at the end of the year, followed by the rest of the world in 2011. GE says that it also plans to unveil a home version of the charger later this year.
“Widespread electric vehicle adoption depends on having charging stations that integrate the need for quick charging with the personal need for easy functionality. GE WattStation will meet this challenge,” says GE ecomagination vice president Steve Fludder.
Dan Heintzelman, president and CEO GE Energy Services, adds that the WattStation is a natural progression in the company’s plans to develop technologies for the next century.
