Pennsylvania launches $650 million energy package

Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell unveiled a $650 million energy package earlier this month aimed at helping homes and businesses invest in energy efficiency and microgeneration.

“We’re putting new resources in place that will help consumers lower their energy use and generate their own power in a cleaner and increasingly more cost-effective manner,” said Rendell in a statement.

Driven by rising energy bills and fuel costs, the new legislation will provide homes and small businesses with a raft of measures to install energy efficiency and renewable power generation technologies.

The measures include:

  • $92.5 million loans, grants and rebates for energy efficiency and conservation measures;
  • $40 million to establish an energy efficiency loan fund for low-income households;
  • $100 million to support installation of solar power technology in homes and businesses;
  • $165 million in loans and grants for business and local government non-solar renewable energy projects;
  • $25 million in grants and loans to homes and businesses for energy efficient new builds or refurbishment work.

Funds will also be devoted to start-ups developing energy efficiency technologies, as well as in the solar, wind and geothermal power generation sectors.

“This new investment fund will strategically target new resources to leverage as much as $3.5 billion in private investment and create at least 13,000 new jobs,” commented Rendell.
