href="http://www.UNWTO.org">United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is targeting the world’s 5.9 million hotel rooms in a bid to increase their energy efficiency.

The €1.1 million project aims to make overall energy savings of at least 20% from improvements in heating, cooling, lighting and washing/drying systems and increase the use of renewables by 10%.

UNWTO is focusing efforts on small- and medium-sized hotels, which make up 90% of hotel rooms, with over half in Europe.

The project will create a toolkit to help SMEs take energy efficiency into account when they make investment decisions and improve access to new technologies.
