rel="external">Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has unveiled plans for an initiative designed to improve the efficiency of electricity transmission.

Transmission losses currently amount to around 300 billion kilowatt hours in the US. Improving efficiency and reducing those losses would enable power generators to produce less energy, cut emissions and lower costs for consumers.

The industry-wide demonstration collaborative, which encompasses the EPRI, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), independent system operators and utilities, will identify technologies to improve efficiency and implement best practices.

“Improving the technology and efficiency of the transmission system is a key component in developing a smarter national grid,” says Arshad Mansoor of the EPRI. “This collaborative will go hand-in-hand with on-going efforts to extract new efficiencies – from generation to end-use – throughout the entire industry.”

The initiative is timely, says FERC Chairman Jon Wellinghoff, amid US Government efforts to upgrade the electricity grid.

“Clearly, implementing new technologies on the bulk power system would benefit both the industry and consumers, while at the same time, reducing the sector’s carbon footprint,” he added.
