Electric vehicle recharging stations go down under

Electric vehicle charging station specialist Coulomb Technologies is taking its technology to Australia.

The company has signed a distribution deal with ChargePoint, which will offer Coulomb’s ChargePoint® Networked Charging Stations throughout the country.

The first mass-produced electric vehicles will arrive in Australia in 2010 with most manufacturers launching models in 2012.

Pilot projects in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne are scheduled to begin in the first half of next year, which will bolster demand for charging stations.

“We firmly believe Australia will grow to become one of our key markets when electric cars really take off,” says CEO of Coulomb Technologies, Richard Lowenthal.

Researcher Andrew Simpson from Curtin University in West Australia says increasing support from governments, energy companies and consumers for electric cars could lead to a rapid market expansion in coming years.

“There is a heightened awareness that electric transport is the way forward,” he says. “Numerous studies have shown that there is the capacity for many electric vehicles to charge at off-peak times which can utilize grid assets more-effectively,” he adds.
