In one of the largest orders ever seen, Danish manufacturer Vestas is to supply EDP Renováveis (EDPR), the renewables division of Portuguese utility Energías de Portugal, with wind turbines up to a capacity of 2100 MW.
Vestas has been contracted to supply, install and commission wind turbines up to a capacity of 1500 MW for North and South America and Europe during 2011-2012, with the option to extend the order to an extra 600 MW in 2010-2011.
“It has been a long and highly competitive process,” says EDPR’s CEO Ana Maria Fernandes.
EDPR ranks third in the world in the generator of wind power, with a total installed capacity of 6227 MW and 30,310 MW in the pipeline.
Meanwhile, Vestas has also received an order totalling 198 MW from a Chinese independent power producer. The order for delivery, installation and commissioning of 116 V52-850 kW wind turbines and 50 V90-1.8/2.0 MW wind turbines should start later this year.
Elsewhere, Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) and BP Solar are joining forces to develop 37.1 MW of photovoltaic power in Italy. Under the agreement, BP Solar will construct the solar farms, while FRV will invest €125 million to own and operate the plants.
And finally, US wind developer Heritage Sustainable Energy has commissioned REpower USA, a subsidiary of German manufacturer REpower Systems, to supply nine 2.05 MW wind turbines for an 18 MW installation in Michigan. REpower Systems has also received an order for 44 of its 3.37 MW 3.XM wind turbines for a wind farm in Turkey.
